Working mom with a sick child.

When you have a job, where other human beings count on you, it’s hard to care about yourself. For years I’ve worked when I was Hurt, sick(but not contagious) or just worked for 11 days on end. I’ve worked dubble shifts to help out. But all that changed as soon as my daugther was born.

My priorities changed. I love my job, and I would rather be at work, instead of staying home with the snot, sweat, puke and poop. (Even if that also happens at my job) but what I don’t mind is taking care of my daughter. When you were a child and was sick, what was the best thing to do? Crawl on your parents lap and just hold them. My daughter is sick right now. As I am writing this blog, she is lying against me chest, holding me tight.

My daughter attends daycare 3 days a week and she loves it. But what mommy doesn’t love is that she gets every disease that other children have and brings it home. Respiratory syncytial virus at 3 months old. She was hospitalized for a week. Every 2 month she has a fever from a cold. We got the stomach flu. We all got corona virus from the daycare. And she is only 10 months old. In these 10 months I missed days at work. And work doesn’t like it.

What to do with a sick child when you are a working mom. This is what I do. I stalk all the direct family members if anyone can babysit. She is not allowed at daycare when she has a fever. With a simple cold or tummy ache, she can go there. But if she gets a fever, they will call me to ask if I can leave work to come get my child. If someone within my family can babysit, I’m Lucky enough to bring them there. But not everyone has somebody in the family who is willing to babysit, or capable. It is important to be greatfull with the family members who lend you a helping hand.

A sick child may: – be fretful or listless, or irritable when disturbed -cry readily and not be easily comforted -lose interest in playing or is unusually quiet and inactive -be unusually quiet and inactive -not want to eat -feel hot to touch -look tired and flushed or pale -complain of feeling cold

What to look for when your baby is sick: -Does she/he drink enough? -Is your child eating? -Does she/he have enough urine diapers? -Is your child alert, or drowsy?

When to call the doctor?

Call the doctor when: -You don’t trust it. Follow your gut. If you have the feeling something is wrong, your mommy insticts are propably right. -When your child has a fever higher than 39 degrees Celsius, for more than 3 days. -When your child is urinating less than usual, or the urine is darker than usual. -When your child is showing signs of pain.

A sick child is never easy, but be greatfull for the help that is given. Be alert for symptoms, and call the doctor where is necessary.
